Both appealed the decision. Verma was placed on leave by the Supreme Court and Verma was re- instated as CBI director two month later. Verma was instructed not to make any major decisions until the fate of the selection committee. The selection committee approved Verma’s transfer to the post of Director General of Fire Safety, Civil Defence and Home Guard after one day. CVC reports submitted in sealed covers to the SC constituted the basis of the committee’s decision. The SC had given the CVC instructions to finish its investigation in two weeks, under the supervision of Justice A.K. (ret. SC judge). Patnaik. The CVC closed the inquiry by submitting a written report detailing the allegations against Verma. Justice Patnaik later stated that there was no evidence against Verma for corruption. Asthana’s complaint was the basis of the entire inquiry. “I have stated in my report that none the findings of the CVC’s reports are mine.”
