Since 2016 he has been the Professor of Advanced Policing Studies at Liverpool John Moores University. The Chief Constable was with Merseyside Police between 2010 until the year 2016.
On January 25, 1975 Murphy began his career with Merseyside Police. He was promoted to the Deputy Chief Constable of Merseyside Police and was a participant in the Association of Chief Police Officers. Then he was the Chief Constable for Merseyside Police between 2010 until 2016 before resigning from the police force.
