Alok Bhattacharya is one of the most popular and richest Biologist who was born on February 2, 1951 in Delhi, India. Alok Bhattacharya was born 2 February 1951. He completed his graduate studies at Hansraj College of University of Delhi in science and earned a master’s in chemistry from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1972. He then did his doctoral research at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s School of Life Sciences (JNU), under Asis Datta, a well-known geneticist and Padma Bhushan Laureate. This led to him obtaining a PhD in 1976. For his post-doctoral research, he moved to the USA to do it at the Laboratory of Pathophysiology of National Cancer Institute from 1977 to 1979 and at Harvard Medical School’s Springer Lab from 1979 to 1981. He returned to India in the same year and joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi as a Senior Research Officer. From 1982, he moved to Pune and joined Tata Research Development and Design Centre of Tata Consultancy Services. There he worked until 1985. Bhattacharya spent a brief time as a guest researcher at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases of National Institutes of Health in 1986. He then joined Jawaharlal Nehru University as an associate professor at the School of Life Sciences, where he is currently the incumbent professor and adjunct faculty. He held several positions at JNU during his tenure, including the position of Coordinator of Bioinformatics Centre (1998–2008), Dean of School of Life Sciences 2002-2004 and Dean of School of Information Technology 2004-2008. He is also a professor of life sciences at Shiv Nadar University in Dadri, and a visiting faculty member at Banaras Hindu University.

Bhattacharya is an associate with the Department of Science and Technology and the chairman of two DST initiatives. One is the Biotechnology Information System Network. This is a bioinformatics program that establishes a centralised database as well as a nationwide network of affiliated organisations. The other is Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Universities, Other Higher Educational Institutions (FIST), where he leads the Expert Committee for Life Sciences. He is a Guha Research Conference member and was vice president of Indian National Science Academy (2011-13). As a member of CSIR Society, he is a member of the governing board of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He also serves as a member of CSIR Society and the research councils of Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology and Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute. These constituent laboratories of CSIR. He is a member of the USER committee of Department of Science and Technology and chaired the Task force for Bioinformatics and Computation Biology and Systems Biology of Department of Biotechnology. GNE-Myopathy International is his managing trustee. This forum is for young patients with GNE-Myopathy. He is also associated with Parasitology International and Journal of Biosciences.

In 1994, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, India’s highest agency for scientific research, gave him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Science and Technology. This award is one of the most prestigious Indian science awards.

Alok Bhattacharya, a Indian parasitologist and academic, was born in 1951. He is a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s School of Life Sciences. He is the Chair of the Biotechnology Information Network (BITSNET), as well as the Life Sciences Expert Committee of FIST Program of the Department of Science and Technology. He is an elected fellow of both the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) and the Indian National Science Academy. His research on Entamoeba himtolytica, species-specific calcium binding proteins and their genes is well-known.

Bhattacharya was a Robert McNamara Fellow of World Bank (1985-86) and was awarded the Shanti Bhatnagar prize by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (94). This is one of the most prestigious Indian science awards. He was also awarded the Science Exhibition Award at Delhi University in 1968-1969 and the Rockefeller Biotechnology Career development Award 1988-1990. He is a J.C. Bose National Fellow of India’s Department of Science and Technology and an elected fellow of both the Indian National Science Academy and Indian Academy of Sciences. In 2015, he was awarded the Aryabhatta medal of the Indian National Science Academy.

Bhattacharya is a former vice president (2009–10) of the Society of Biological Chemists (India), a science society based at the Indian Institute of Science, serves as a member for internal expert panel of the Council of Indian Institutes of Technology and is involved with the Project AMOEBAC of the Infect-ERA, a global organization for researches on human infectious diseases. He has delivered several guest lectures and keynote addresses and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Symposium on Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology organized by the National Network for Mathematical and Computational Biology (NNMCB) of the Department of Science and Technology to be held during 12–14 November 2016 at Central University of Himachal Pradesh. He has also mentored research scholars in their doctoral researches.
