Alla Yaroshinskaya, a Ukrainian politician/journalist, was born 14 February 1953 in Zhytomyr Oblast. From 1989 to 1991 she was a member the Supreme Soviet, Deputy to Minister of Press and Information, and then Adviser for the Russian President Boris Yeltsin and member the Russian Presidential Council. She was a prominent advocate for perestroika, better aid and information after the Chernobyl catastrophe. She served as President of Ecological Charity Fund and Co-chair of Russian Ecological Congress. She is also Chief of the Federal Council of all-Russian Social Democratic Movement. Over 20 books, 700 articles, and co-authors on freedom of speech and human rights and nuclear security have been written by her.

She was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 1992 for “disclosing, against opposition and persecution, how severe the Chernobyl disaster has had on local people”. In 2005, she was nominated as part of 1000 PeaceWomen for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was also awarded the Ukrainian Zolotepero (“Golden Feather”) award.

She continued her campaign for the full disclosure of Chernobyl contamination on the Supreme Soviet’s Ecology and Glasnost Committee. She was appointed in 1990 to a Commission to investigate Chernobyl and presented the matter to the European Parliament. Yaroshinskaya was systematically blocked by bureaucrats from allowing her to make copies of relevant documents. Despite this, she was able to make copies of top-secret documents from the Politburo, Central Committee. She began to investigate the evacuation after the Chernobyl catastrophe in late 1986. She and her husband travelled secretly into radiation-contaminated areas, since the newspaper she worked for had banned such activities. She concluded that evacuatees from highly contaminated villages were resettled in areas barely more contaminated than their original homes. Their only food was heavily irradiated and that their accommodations were inadequate. Officially denied or ignored their health issues, she said. Although her article was not accepted for publication, she distributed samizdat copy.

In 1989, she was proposed to Gorbachev’s inaugural parliament as a candidate. This led to fierce criticism in Soviet media and a criminal case against her for criticizing the authorities. Despite being persecuted by her and her supporters she rallied her supporters and was elected with 90.4%.

Yaroshinskaya’s political work has involved international security, including the elimination and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. As a member of the Russian Presidential Council she participated in Preparation Committees of the United Nations (UN) in the UN Conference on Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (1995), and in the UN Women’s Conference (1995).
