Alison Hargreaves is one of the most popular and richest Mountain Climber who was born on February 17, 1962 in Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. Alison Jane Hargreaves was a British mountain climber. She lived from 17 February 1962 to 13 August 1995. In 1995, she was the first person to scale Mount Everest without any support or oxygen from a Sherpa team. She was the first climber to solo all of the great north faces in the Alps in a single year. This feat also included climbing the Eiger’s north face in the Alps in 1988. Hargreaves also scaled 6,812-metres (22,349 ft), Ama Dablam in Nepal.
In 1995, Hargreaves intended to climb the three highest mountains in the world–Mount Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga–unaided. She reached Everest’s summit on 13 May 1995 without any help from Sherpas, bottled oxygen, and she died at the top of K2 on 13 August 1995.
After a brief visit to her family in the United Kingdom, she returned to America in June 1995 to join a team that had obtained a permit to climb K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, at 8,611 metres (28,251 feet). K2 is considered a more dangerous and difficult climb than Mount Everest. The US team, Hargreaves, and the remaining members of the US team had joined forces at Camp 4, 7,600m (24,900ft) above the sea level and less than 12 hours from the summit. After having joined a Spanish team, Peter Hillary, the son of Sir Edmund Hillary, the Everest pioneer, decided to return to New Zealand. He noted that the weather had changed and that it was getting colder. Hargreaves and Javier Olivar, a Spaniard, reached the summit in perfect conditions at 6:45pm. They were followed by Rob Slater, American Rob Slater and Lorenzo Ortiz (Spanish), and Bruce Grant (New Zealander). While returning from the summit, all six were killed in a severe storm. Canadian Jeff Lakes, who had climbed back to the summit earlier but failed to reach the lower camp, succumbed to the effects of exposure.
