Zuhal Sultan is one of the most popular and richest Pianist who was born on July 18, 1991 in Baghdad, Baghdad Governorate, Iraq. Zuhal Sultan was born in Baghdad in July 1991. She is the youngest member of a scientific family consisting of two boys (and two girls) and one girl. Both her parents received Ph.D. degrees in natural sciences at universities in the United Kingdom. At six years old, she began piano lessons with a private tutor. She auditioned for the Music and Ballet School of Baghdad when she was 9. Zuhal lost her piano teacher after the departure of many intellectuals and artists from Iraq in 2003. Zuhal taught herself and the younger children in her piano class. Despite these challenges, Zuhal performed at concerts at home and abroad. Zuhal was a member the Leonard Bernstein Mass Orchestra.

Zuhal was selected as a British Council Global Changemaker 2008 and was invited to be a peer facilitator at their 4th Global Youth Summit 2009. UNICEF and UNESCO were involved in her raising awareness through concerts and speeches, as well as media interviews, about Iraqi culture and children’s rights. Zuhal was a keynote speaker for FairSay’s eCampaiging forum at Oxford University in 2009. Zuhal was also a Global Youth Ambassador for Musicians For Harmony, based in New York. She was also a close friend of Mr. Rekawt Omar Karim from Iraqi Kurdistan Halabja. She also attended the World Economic Forum’s Special Meeting on Economic Growth in the Arab World (21-23 October 2011 at the Dead Sea, Jordan).

Zuhal was honored with the title UNESCO’s Young Artist in Intercultural Dialogue Between the Arab and Western Worlds at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in spring 2011. She was nominated for the Rolex Awards: Young Laureates Programme and Clarins Most Dynamisante Women of 2010.

Zuhal Sultan (Arabic zHl slTn – born 1991 in Baghdad), is an activist and pianist from Iraq. At the age of 17, she founded the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq.

She was selected by Raw T.V. and Channel 4 in 2008. For their web-based Battlefront program to promote the establishment of the first National Youth Orchestra of Iraq. She formed the orchestra along with Paul MacAlindin, a Scottish conductor, and Allegra Klein, Musicians For Harmony’s artistic Director, with the support of the British Council, and Barham Salih, the former Deputy Prime Minister for Iraq, whom she reached out through Twitter. The orchestra made its debut in Al Suleimanya, Kurdish country in August 2009. In 2010, the orchestra performed in Erbil, Kurdish. Plans are underway for a follow up academy in 2011.

In 2015 Zuhal was named the Euphrates Institute’s Visionary of the Year. She gave a speaking tour across the US and did a number of interviews including NPR and St. Louis public radio.
