Zuhairi Mirawi, a writer from Indonesia, was born in Sumenep Madura, East Java (February 5, 1977). Misrawi was a young intellectual at Nahdlatul Ulama, (NU), who was a traditionalist member the Sunni Islam group of Indonesia. Misrawi received his undergraduate education at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, with the Creed-Philosophy Department Faculty of Usul al-Din. Misrawi returned from Cairo as an active participant in Nahdlatul Ulama’s Institute for Study and Human Resource (Lakpesdam NU), and was the Coordinator of Study and Research between 2000 and 2002. Misrawi has been a director of the “Moderate Muslim Society” and is very familiar with the world of Islamic thought.

Misrawi completed his studies in Egypt in 2000. He returned to Indonesia in 2002 and was the coordinator for study and research at Lakpesdam NU from 2000 to 2002. Misrawi, along with other young leaders from NU, published a Lakpesdam thought journal titled “Tashwirul Afkar” in 2000. He became the editor of the journal between 2005 and 2005.

Misrawi spent six years studying at the seminary. He was never satisfied with his pursuit of knowledge, particularly in the area of religion. Misrawi completed his graduate studies in the Creed-Philosophy Department Faculty of Usul al-Din Al-Azhar University Cairo, Egypt (1995-2000). His ability to analyze the Islamic world has grown since Misrawi was a student. He is active in the writing world and was the editor (editor), on the bulletin Terobosan as well as chief editor for the university journal “Oase”.

Misrawi was a keen student of Islam, particularly pesantren (Islamic board schools), since childhood. In 1989-1990, he was a student at the Al-Quran Memorization Association. For five years, Misrawi studied at the TMI al-Amien (Prenduan), Sumenep and Madura pesantrens, from 1990 to 1995. Misrawi was able to learn many fundamental Islamic sciences from this pesantren environment, including the Quran, Tafsir, Fiqh (interpretation science), literature, and philosophy.

In 2008, Misrawi became the director of the Moderate Modern Society, in Jakarta. The Moderate Modern Society is a research institute that aims to convey the moderation in Indonesia’s development approach, especially in terms of religious tolerance and social justice in a plural society (various) with democratic ideas.
