Baya, an attacking midfielder who displayed great skill and entrepreneurialism on the international stage, provided North Africa with vast international experience.
Baya moved again in 2001 after signing with Besiktas. Baya played a key role in Tunisia’s second consecutive World Cup finals qualification. Baya played in every game of the qualification round, scoring six goals. He was the top goal scorer in his country and one of the bright spots in a team that had been plagued by inconsistency the year before. He returned to Etoile du Sahel after the 2002 FIFA World Cup to continue his playing career.
Baya was twice named Tunisian Footballer Of The Year. He wore the national colors of Tunisia at the 1998 World Cup in France, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He was also an important member of the Tunisian teams that competed in the finals of the 2002, 2000, and 1998 African Nations Cup. After the 2002 FIFA World Cup, he retired shortly after.
