Zoran Thaler Biography

Zoran Thaler is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 21, 1962 in Kranj, Slovenia. Zoran Thaler, a Slovenian politician (born (1962-01-21) 21 January 1962 (age of 58)) is a businessman and politician. He was a former foreign minister of Slovenia and a member of the European Parliament.

He was elected to the European Parliament on 7 June 2009 as the head of the Social Democrats for Europe list. Thaler, a member and EP Rapporteur for Macedonia as well as vice-chairman for the EP Delegation to the South Caucasus was Thaler’s role. He is also a member EP Foreign Affairs Committee.

On 21 March he resigned as a member of the European Parliament. European Anti- fraud Office – OLAF investigated the case. In January 2012 OLAF concluded the investigation with the decision that there was “no infringement” on Thaler’s side.

In the first free elections in Slovenia, he was elected to the Slovenian Parliament as member of the Alliance of the Socialist Youth of Slovenia – Liberal Party (later renamed to Liberal Democratic Party) and became Deputy Foreign Minister (1990–1993) in first democratic Government of Slovenia ruled by the DEMOS coalition. He was re-elected to the Parliament in 1992 and 1996 on the list of the ruling Liberal Democracy of Slovenia. Between 1993 and 1995, he served as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Parliament.

After Lojze Peterle, Slovene Christian Democrats, had resigned, Thaler was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia by Janez Drnovsek in January 1995. Tensions with neighboring Italy were a hallmark of Thaler’s tenure in office. These tensions had already started in previous years. Most of the disagreements between the countries revolved around property restitution to Yugoslavian refugees who fled Yugoslavia in the late 1940s. Thaler was part of several negotiations with Susanna Agnelli (the Italian Foreign Minister), in which he lifted the Italian veto on Slovenia’s acces to the European Union. It was demanded by the Italian counterpart that Slovenia change its constitution which prohibited foreigners from purchasing real estate in Slovenia. Slovenia reached the “Spanish compromise” in 1996. This agreement allowed Slovenia to openly liberalize its property market regulations and allow Italians and other EU citizens to buy real estate in Slovenia. This led to the lifting of the Italian veto on Slovenia’s accession to the European Union. This agreement allowed Slovenia to sign the Association Agreement in Luxembourg with the EU on June 10, 1996 and then apply for EU membership that day.

Thaler was reelected to Parliament in December 1996 on the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia list. He was again elected to Parliament in December 1996 on the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia list. The Parliament impeached Thaler in May 1996. A part of the ruling coalition, the MPs from Slovene Christian Democrats, was impeached in the final vote. They joined the two main opposition forces, the Slovenian People’s Party (Slovene People’s Party) and the Social Democratic Party of Slovenia (Slovene Social Democratic Party).

In March 2011, The Sunday Times implicated Thaler among other members of the European Parliament in a cash-for-laws scandal. Rupert Murdoch’s Sunday Times also provided edited video of Thaler discussing adding amendments to EU laws with undercover journalists.
