Makkawi started his career in Wall Street with JP Morgan in 1986. After leaving JP Morgan in 1986, he joined Elf Aquitaine in Geneva. He then moved to the Middle East to help co-found Lebanon Invest. Bank Audi later bought it and Middle East Capital Group became its Managing Director. Makkawi left Dubai in 2000 to start and manage Shuaa Capital’s financial services business, which includes asset management, proprietary trading and capital markets. He was named Dubai Bank CEO in 2004 and in 2006 he established and served as chairman and CEO Algebra Capital, a MENA-focused Asset Management firm that he later sold in 2010 to Global Asset Manager Franklin Templeton. Makkawi is a pioneer in both the asset management and investment banking industries in the region. He was named CEO of Istithmar World in 2013, a multi-billion dollar global PE investment arm of Dubai World.
Makkawi is an Arab Contemporary Art collector and promoter. He is also a sponsor for Art Sawa, one of the leading regional art galleries that promotes emerging and established talent from Middle East.
