He had much success with the Chinese relay team that year, setting national records of 38.71 seconds then 38.65 seconds in May. In his second Olympic appearance he helped the relay team to record another Chinese record of 38.38 seconds in the qualifiers.

China’s 2008 Summer Olympics saw Zhang race in the 200 m heats. He was also part of the 4 x 100 m relay team with Hu Kai, Wen Yongyi, and Lu Bin. They were able to finish the qualification heat in 39.13 seconds, which was good enough for them to make it to the final. However, they were disqualified and placed second. He finished second to Liang Jiahong at the October national championships, but he was unable to defend his 100-meter title.
