He was playing for Shenyang Haishi in the 2004 league season. However, he was called up to the Chinese national soccer team for several training sessions with head coach Arie Haian. It wasn’t until 2011, when Zhang joined Guizhou Renhe, that he showed maturity in goal and was again called up to play for the national team. Gao Hongbo, his manager at the time, would not only call Zhang up for a friendly, but also try him out against North Korea in a 2-0 win on June 8, 2011.

Zhang Lie began his football career with Shenyang Haishi, a top-tier local football team. He would become the first choice goalkeeper for the club by Zhang Guangying at season’s beginning. Martin Koopman, the new club manager, decided to bring Guo Chunquan (and Wang Lue) into the team after Shenyang’s poor performance at the end. Zhang was then relegated to third place goalkeeper for the 2005 season. Song Zhenyu was brought in by the club to provide more competition in goal. Zhang would need to prove himself to Koopman before Song would be promoted to first-choice goalkeeper. Zhang was second choice for most of the season.

Zhang was permitted to leave Shenyang in 2007. However, he had difficulty finding a new club and decided to quit playing to accept a job as a goalkeeping coach at Liaoning Guangyuan. Zhang returned to Shenyang Dongjin, where he was able to revive his career and saw them win the division title. He also got promoted to the second level. Zhang’s impressive performances in the following season saw the club move to third place and only miss out on promotion to the top tier. Zhang was able to attract the attention of Shaanxi Renhe, a top-tier side. They were interested in Zhang’s services when they discovered that Zhang’s contract was ending. However, Shenyang Dongjin believed Zhang had extended his contract and that it was up for sale at 2,000,000 Yuan. The Chinese Football Association would hear the case and decide that Zhang had not signed a contract extension. Zhang was then free to join Shaanxirenhe. Later, the club was relocated to Guizhou Renhe. Guizhou Renhe won the AFC Champions League with fourth place in league, runners-up in FA Cup, and he was present in every game of the 2012 Super League season.
