He competed in his first international competition in 2010. With his best jump (2.23m), he won the silver medal at Asian Junior Athletics Championships 2010. At the Chinese Athletics Championships, he finished second to Huang Haiqiang. He placed eighth at the Asian Championships in 2011 after being undefeated on both the Asian Athletics Grand Prix circuit and the Asian Championships. He was chosen for the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. In the qualifying, he set a personal record of 2.31 m and finished tenth in final. He won his first Chinese high-jump title with a jump of 2.28m at the national championships.
Zhang was awarded the silver medal at the 2012 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships. He placed second in his region behind Barshim, who was his junior rival. Zhang finished fourth at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships with a Chinese record of 2.31m, which was tied with Zhu Jianhua, who is also a former world record holder. Although he was chosen to represent China at 2012 London Olympics, he did not make it to the final. In September, he defended his national title by equaling his personal best.
