Zaw Htet Ko Ko Biography

Zaw Htet Ko Ko is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 6, 1981 in Myanmar. After the 2005 group’s founding, Zaw Htet K Ko was introduced to the 88 Generation Students Group by Htay Kywe (one of the group leaders). The group demanded the end of Burma’s military leadership and the State Peace and Development Council. It also called for the release all alleged political prisoner and a return of democracy.

As part of a series amnesties for political prisoners, Zaw Htet Ko Ko received a pardon on 11 or 12 Oct 2011.

He was transferred from Insein Prison to Kyaukpyu Prison, Rakhine State on 6 February 2009. An Irrawaddy report on Zaw Htet Ko Ko’s situation states that “transferring political prisoners into distant prisons is one tactic to further punish prisoners, and increase their burden on their families or friends.”

The 88 Generation Students Group was a key organizer of protests in the aftermath of the Saffron Revolution, which occurred in August 2007. Over one hundred thousand people attended the largest rally, including many Buddhist monks. Zaw Thet Ko Ko was present at several rallies, including the march led by Nilar Thein and Mie Mie on 23 August. Min Ko Naing was one of the group leaders who were arrested. He joined Htay Kywe, Mie Mie and others in hiding after that. The three men were taken into custody at a rubber plantation on 13 October with their fellow members Aung Thu, Hein Htet.

His father claimed that his son believed Zaw Htet Ko Ko was being held in torture during the weeks after Zaw Htet Ko Ko’s arrest. Although Zaw Thet Ko Ko was able to escape the 65-year sentences that were given to his fellow members, such as Min Ko Naing and Htay Kywe, Mie Mie and Nilar Thein on 21 November 2008 he was sentenced by an Insein Prison special court to five years hard labor. He was then charged with six more years imprisonment. This made his total sentence to eleven years. Front Line and Amnesty International protested the sentence, which was later made into a prisoner-of-conscience. Human Rights Watch declared that the 88 Generation Student Group members imprisoned were political prisoners, and demanded their unconditional and immediate release.
