She was twelve years old when she developed weakness in her legs, which led to inability for her to walk. A tuberculosis infection was discovered in her spine. She entered a semi-coma for two years. After that, she was paralysed from the fourth vertebra and left her wheelchair-bound. She was educated at Mthatha after becoming disabled.
Situ was unsuccessful at the Beijing 2008 Summer Paralympics. In 2011, she was back to her best, winning bronze at Chritchurch World Championships. However, title challenges were difficult due to the emergence world-class competitors like Hania Aidi from Tunisia and Yang Liwan from China. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics, Situ threw 16.22 metres but fell short of the podium.
Situ successfully defended her title as the javelin champion at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens two years later. While she did not finish on the podium in the shot put or discus, the International Paralympic Committee awarded her the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award.

Ntombizanele Situ, better known as Zanele Situ is a Paralympian athlete who competes mainly in the category F54 throwing events. Situ, who is a specialist in javelin throws, is the first woman of color from South Africa to win a Paralympic Gold Medal.
Situ made her international debut in 1998, when she represented South Africa in the first IPC Athletics World Championships in Birmingham, England. She won gold in both the javelin throw and discus throw, with a throw of 14.45 meters. She was then invited to Sydney’s 2000 Summer Paralympics. There she won gold in F52-54 javelin, and silver in F51-54 discus. She became the first South African woman black athlete to win a Paralympic gold medal in Sydney. She defended her javelin title in Lille two years later, but it was not enough to earn her fourth place finish. In 2003, Situ was honored by her country with the Order of Ikhamanga (silver), for her contributions in sport.
In between the 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics, Situ claimed two more world bronze medals, at Lyon (2013) and Doha (2015), both in the javelin. At Rio, in the 2016 Paralympics, Situ achieved a personal best in the javelin, throwing a 17.90 metre mark in her third round to take her first Paralympic medal in twelve years, a bronze. At the Rio Games she was also recognized by her country, being given the honour of flag bearer during the opening ceremony.
