Zakiya, a 15 year old, was named Hal Jackson’s Talented Teens Miss International Queen of 1993. She signed with Ric Wake’s production firm as part of the girl group Faces two years later. After a year in the group, Zakiya decided to pursue a solo career. She signed with DV8 Records 1995.

In 1998, a 12-inch single was released for “I Like”, as well as another single, “I Wanna Be There You Are”. Later that year, a seven-track EP was released on vinyl. Before work began on her second album, Zakiya was removed from DV8.

Zakiya A. Kunnerlyn was an American R&B/soul artist who released a self-titled album on DV8 Records back in 1997. The album’s two singles, “Love Like Mine” & “My Love Won’t Fade away”, were entered into Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart.

In 1996, Zakiya’s debut single, “Love Like Mine,” was released. Billboard’s review of the song noted that Zakiya has “the voice to be taken seriously” as she “slinks through a song with a sing-along refrain which sticks to the brain even after the first listen.” Andrew Hamilton from Allmusic was critical about the five versions of the song on the single. The music video for “Love Like Mine”, was added to BET’s video rotation. It peaked at number 60 in the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts.

In 1997, Zakiya released her second single, “My Love Will Not Fade Away”. This song features Charisma as a guest rapper and Barry White’s 1977 song, “Playing Your Game, Baby”. The Billboard review of “My Love Won’t Fare Away” said that Zakiya’s voice was similar to that of Gladys Knight and that her “sleek jeep- soul cruiser exudes mucho star power.” The song’s music video was added to BET’s video rotation. It reached number one on The Box’s weekly video countdown, May 1997. Zakiya’s debut album, “My Love Won’t Fade away”, was also released in May 1997.

Currently retired from the music industry, in 2012 she opened a floral shop in Maplewood, New Jersey which is still open.
