Zach began the 2007 season in Triple A Toledo. However, he was called up on May 17 and made a spot-start against the Boston Red Sox to replace the injured Mike Maroth. Miner was then called up to the bullpen after a short return to Toledo. Miner finished the season with a record of 3-4 and he threw in 34 innings. Through 53 innings, Zach allowed 18 runs and scored 22 runs.

In April 2009, Miner came off a strong start in his first outing of the season to being roughed up in his second outing against the White Sox. In this game, he allowed back to back home runs to Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko – the 300th of each man’s career.

Miner signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals on December 31, 2010.

Miner was not on the final 25-man roster for 2006 spring training. However, he was called up by the Tigers to replace Mike Maroth in May 2006. He was a reliable fifth starter, but was transferred to the bullpen at the end of the season. As a relief pitcher, he was on the Tigers playoff roster. He pitched one game in the 2006 World Series against St. Louis Cardinals.

Miner, who stands 6’3 inches tall and weighs 205 lbs, had never played college before. However, Miner did play high school baseball at Palm Beach Gardens Community High School. Miner was an Atlanta Braves fourth-round pick. In 2000, Miner received the second-team All American pitcher award and was offered a full scholarship to Miami University.

Miner was a pitcher in the Braves minor-league system from 2001 to 2004. He pitched for the Single A Jamestown Jammers (2001), the Class-A Macon Braves(2002), the Single-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans(2003) and the Double-A Greenville Braves (2006). He was with the Double-A Mississippi Braves in 2005, but after only four games, he was promoted the Triple-A Richmond Braves. Miner played 17 games with the Braves and went 2-7 with a 4.23 ERA. The Braves traded Miner and relief pitcher Roman Colon to Detroit Tigers on July 31, 2005 for Kyle Farnsworth, setup man/closer.

Miner started the 2008 season with the Tigers, but was sent to Toledo July 2 after walking four batters in two innings in a loss to the Minnesota Twins. On July 21, Miner returned to the Tigers as a starter against the Kansas City Royals. Miner pitched six shutout innings in the Tigers 19–4 victory.
