He was the son of Cecile Griboval (born Toutain) and Roger Griboval (1908-1997). Roger Griboval, an impressionist painter at the Ecole de Rouen was well-known for his talents as an aquarellist. Yvan Griboval was a small child who discovered the beauty of nature while painting en plein air with his father, Roger. He spent all his weekends and holidays in Saint-Valery-en-Caux, where he was taught very young to fish on the sea, and above all to discover the marine environment and to the sailing competition on Requin.

Yvan Griboval created the Trophee des Sailing Champions at Chantier KL Nautique in 1990, following Pierre and Antoine Legris’ request. The French version of the event, which was first held in 1990, has been named the Trophee Clairefontaine. This is due to the collaboration with the eponymous papermaker (Groupe des Papeteries de Clairefontaine) that was established in spring 1990. The event is held every year in September. The Trophee Clairefontaine was created in La Trinite-sur-Mer.
