He attended Fagge Primary school 1968-1975 and then went on to Aminu Kano Community Commercial College 1975-1980. In 1984, he graduated from Bayero University Kano (BUK), with a BSc in Economics. He also completed his Masters in Development Studies at the same University Bayero University Kano (BUK) and his National Youth Service Corps.
Ata was elected Speaker of Kano State House of Assembly after his predecessor, Rt. Hon Kabiru Alhassan Rurum was elected Speaker Kano State House of Assembly due to the allegations against him. He was previously the Majority Leader of Kano State House of Assembly before being nominated. Ata was first elected in 2015 to Fagge Constituency to represent the third term. Abdullahi Chiromawa Member representing Warawa Constituency, and Abdullahi Chiromawa Member representing Kura/Garum Mallam Constituency. Ata was then replaced by Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, who was his deputy
Later, he joined politics and was elected to Kano State House of Assembly as Fagge Constituency member. He also served as Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation from 2003. He lost his seat in the House during the 2003 General Election. He then returned to Kano State House of Assembly, where he was Chairman of the House Committee on Finance. He was elected Majority Leader of Kano State House of Assembly in 2015. Later, he was elected speaker of Kano State House of Assembly after the resignation of his predecessor, Rt. Hon Kabiru Alhassan Rurum was the victim of this allegation.
