Yury Zacharanka is one of the most popular and richest Belarusian politician who was born on January 1, 1952 in Vasilievičy, Gomel Region, Belarus. Colonel Yury Zakharanka (Belarusian, Iury Zakharanka; Russian: Iurii Zakharenko or Yuri Zakharenko; January 1st, 1952 – May 7th, 1999) was a Belarusian minister of inner affairs. He was abducted and possibly killed in 1999.
Deutsche Welle published a documentary in December 2019 in which Yury Gravski, a former member of a special unit of Belarus’ Ministry of Internal Affairs, stated that Zecharanka had been arrested, taken away, and killed by them. They also did the same with Viktar Hanschar and Anatol Krouski.
Five Belarusian officials were arrested by the United States and the European Union in September 2004 for their involvement in the kidnapping Zacharanka. They include Interior Affairs Minister Vladimir Naumov and Prosecutor General Viktor Sheiman. Also, the Minister for Sports and Tourism Yuri Sivakov and Colonel Dmitry Pavlichenko, both from the Belarus Interior Ministry.

Zakharanka, at the time of Belarus’ independence, was the deputy chief of the Interregional Organised Criminality Fighting department of the Soviet MVD. He was elected Minister of Internal Affairs of Belarus in 1994. Alexander Lukaschenko dismissed him from his position as Minister of Internal Affairs on October 16, 1995. Zakharanka was a member of the opposition to the President and was elected member of governing board of United Civil Party of Belarus. Zakharanka, who enjoyed strong support from top officers of the army and the State Security Agency (“KGB”) was a dangerous enemy to Lukashenko.
In the early hours of May 7, 1999, the ex-minister vanished. The state failed to make any serious efforts to find the politician. Aleh Alkajeu, a former MVD official, fled to Germany several years later and claimed that he witnessed Zakharanka’s assassination and the execution of other opposition leaders at the order of high ranking government officials. To commemorate the political prisoners and politicians abducted from Belarus, the Belarusian opposition has on the 16th of each month The Day of Solidarity With Belarus.
