Yuriko Kajiya is one of the most popular and richest Ballet Dancer who was born on June 25, 1984 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Yuriko was born in Nagoya (Japan) and began training with Matsumoto Michiko Ballet at the age of eight. At the age of 10 she moved to China, where she studied at and graduated from Shanghai Ballet School. At age 13, she won the Best Performance Award for the senior category of the Tao Li Bei National Ballet Competition. She was also a finalist at the Third International Ballet Competition in Nagoya in 1999. In January 2000, she was awarded a Prix de Lausanne. This allowed her to continue her training at the National Ballet of Canada in Toronto.
ABT’s repertoire included Kitri in Don Quixote and Giselle in Giselle. Gamzatti in La Bayadere, Gamzatti and Gulnare were all part of her repertoire. Clara was also the princess in Alexei Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker. Olga in Onegin, Princess Florine and Princess Florine in The Sleeping Beauty. Kajiya quit ABT to join Houston Ballet in 2014 as a first soloist. Kajiya’s final performance was in the role of Swanilda, the star in Coppelia. Joseph Gorak was her partner in that performance. Kajiya joined Houston Ballet in 2014 with Jared Matthews, her life partner. They are looking for great artistic opportunities. After only five months, Kajiya was promoted to principal dancer in November 2014. This was after her performance in Ben Stevenson’s The Nutcracker. She has increased her repertoire and danced all the major roles in the company, including the choreography debuts by Stanton Welch, the company director. She now has Kenneth McMillan’s Manon and Mayerling and William Forsythe’s Artifact Suite. Stanton Welch’s Giselle and Madame Butterfly, The Nutcracker and La Bayadere. Paquita and Swan Lake are some of her repertoire.
