Chepalova was absent at the 2006-2007 cross-country skiing World Cup due to pregnancy.

She tested positive for Erythropoietin (EPO) during an in-competition doping control on 3 January 2009 in Val di Fiemme, Italy. She was banned from competition for two years after this.

Chepalova became the youngest female winner in the 30 km freestyle event at the 1998 Winter Olympics. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Turin, Chepalova won an entire set of medals, including gold in the Individual sprint and silver in 10 km classic. She also took home bronze in the 15km freestyle. Chepalova won two more medals at the Winter Olympics in Turin. She won a gold medal in the 4×5 km relay and a Silver in the 30km freestyle mass start.

Chepalova, the daughter of a cross-country ski coach, began skiing as soon as she could walk. Yuliya, who was coached by Anatoly Chepalov her father, made her debut in 1986. She continued her upward climb through the Soviet system (and then Russian) after the fall of the Soviet Union in late91. Chepalov was a Russian coach for the junior national team and reportedly sold all of his assets in order to finance his daughter’s education. Chepalova, who is currently associated with Dynamo Moscow and lives in Syktyvkar, with her second husband Vasily Rochev and their daughter Olesya. Their daughter Vaselina was born in February 2007. She works as a coach and teaches sports.

Chepalova made her debut on the FIS cross country circuit in 1995-1996. She has remained in the Top 15 all her career. The 2002-2003 season was her only exception. Olesya took maternity leave in 2002-2003 to have Olesya. In 2000-2001, she finished #1 overall. She also placed #3 in 2005-2006 in the distance category (greater that 5km). FIS Nordic Ski Championships was her success story. She won golds in both the 4×5 km relay (2001), and the 7.5km + 7.5km double pursuit (2005-2006). Silvers were also earned in the 4×5 km relay and the 10 km freestyle (both 2005), as well as bronzes in Team sprint (2001), and Individual sprint (2005). Chepalova, along with Larisa Lazutina, a Russian cross-country skier, has been the winner of the women’s 30-km at the Holmenkollen skiing festival three times (1999. 2004, and 2006. In 2004, she was awarded the Holmenkollen Medal.

Immediately after the EPO test results went public her father and coach Anatoly Chepalov officially announced her retirement. On 29 November 2009 Chepalova addressed IOC President Jacques Rogge where she came down hard on the World Anti-Doping Agency, accusing the organisation of being biased and unscrupulous in general, of unlawful ruling of her case in particular, and of “severing the career” of many good athletes but all the efforts to restore her good name were of no avail. Following this in December 2009 Chepalova ostracised Russian Olympic Committee President Leonid Tyagachyov and Ski Federation of Russia President Vladimir Loginov for their inaction in matters of defending the sportsmen whose guilt is not yet proven.
