It contained extensive social and political criticism. Yu was a “literary phenomenon” after his first book, Fire and Ice, was published in 1999. He also met Liu Xiaobo a democracy activist and became an active member of the Chinese dissident movements. He read and commented upon drafts of Charter 08 democracy manifesto Charter 08 as part of his collaboration with Liu. He also helped to found the Independent PEN Center.

Yu was held by security officers in July 2010 in order to discuss his forthcoming book China’s Best Actor, Wen Jiabao. This “scathing critique” about China’s prime minster that Yu planned to publish in Hong Kong. According to the book, Wen’s warm and empathic public image was a façade, and he had the same goals as other Chinese leaders. Yu claims that a government official said his book was “harming the state security and national interest” and Yu would likely be in prison for many years if it were to be published. Yu published the book in August.

In 2012, Yu was named the winner of the 2012 Civil Courage Prize of the US- based Train Foundation. The prize recognizes “steadfast resistance to evil at great personal risk — rather than military valor.” The prize comes with a $50,000 honorarium. He was the first Chinese person to win the award, and he stated that he hoped the prize would encourage China’s dissidents.

His house arrest, and a concomitant travel ban, lasted until January 2012, at which point he and his family emigrated to the US. Following his emigration, he submitted a nine-page report detailing his alleged torture to the US State Department and the United Nations Human Rights Council. He stated that he was continuing to write Liu’s biography, and was also at work on a new biography of Chinese president Hu Jintao titled “Hu Jintao: Cold-Blooded Tyrant”.

Yu’s close friend Liu Xiaobo won the Nobel Peace Prize on October 8. Yu was placed under house arrest on October 13th, allegedly because he had plans to write a biography about Liu and for publishing China’s Best Actor. Later, Yu wrote that he was subject to torture by the secret police of China and almost lost his life during this time. Yu claims Yu was stripped naked and burned with cigarettes until Yu was taken to the hospital.
