Yossi Sassi is one of the most popular and richest Musician who was born on February 5, 1975 in Israel. Yossi (Hebrew: yvsy sAsy), a guitarist and producer from Israel, was born on 5 February 1975. He blends contemporary and traditional music. He is also the inventor of “bouzoukitara”, a musical instrument. He is well-known for his pioneering work in oriental rock and being the co-founder, main composer, arranger and co-founder, Orphaned, an Israeli progressive metal band that was formed in 1991. He was also the founder of The Yossi Sassi Band/The Oriental Rock Orchestra. Rock Hard magazine readers voted him the “Top Newcomer 2012” for his debut solo album Melting Clocks. Grammy Award consideration was given to Roots and Roads, his 2016 album.
Sassi started his own solo band in 2011 with musicians from different genres. These included Shay Ifrah (jazz/fusion guitarist), Ben Azar (jazz/fusion guitarist) and Or Lubianiker, (Project R’n’L Marty Friedman) as bass guitar. Sassi’s solo music combines rock and traditional folk music. He also uses melodic vocals to blend instrumentals with his own songs. Melting Clocks was Yossi’s first solo album. This album features traditional instruments like bouzoukis, ouds, cumbuses, and others.
In January 2014, Sassi announced his sophomore album Desert Butterflies, a conceptual piece continuing where he left off with Melting Clocks. The album includes musical collaborations with Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Guns N’ Roses), Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth), Mariangela Demurtas (Tristania), and more. Desert Butterflies was released in May 2014 worldwide, and welcomed with positive reviews from leading industry magazines (“Truly progressive, truly original, demolishing boundaries …” – Prog Magazine’s Rich Wilson). His third album, Roots and Roads, was released on 25 May 2016, receiving highly commendatory reviews from the media. Roots and Roads was submitted to the 2016 Grammys. Sassi’s fourth studio release, titled Illusion of Choice, came out in 2018 under the moniker Yossi Sassi & The Oriental Rock Orchestra, and features Haken’s frontman Ross Jennings and Ester Rada.
Sassi created an instrument in 2011 that would become an “embodiment” of his musical journey. The “bouzoukitara” was born out of the need to find a way to quickly switch between his acoustic Greek Bouzouki and his electric guitar. It is a unique instrument that combines an acoustic bouzouki and an electric solid-body guitarist. He was joined by Benjamin Millar, a luthier, to make his design a reality. Sassi can create unique sounds layers by using the double- neck instrument. It has a shared surface that resonates with the open strings of the other guitarist when it is played.
