Ylva Julia Margareta Johannsson, a Swedish politician, has been the European Commissioner for Home Affairs (ECHA) since 2019. She was Minister for Schools 1994-1998, Minister for Welfare and Elderly Healthcare 2004-2006, and Minister for Employment 2014-2019. Since 2006, she has been a member the Swedish Riksdag.
Johansson was appointed Minister for Health and Elderly Care by Prime Minister Goran persson in 2004. He succeeded Lars Engqvist.
From 2014, Johansson served as Minister for Employment in the government of Prime Minister Stefan Löfven. During her time in office, she worked to tighten labor immigration laws.
In March 2018, Johansson appeared on the BBC, where she claimed that the number of reported rapes and sexual harassment cases in Sweden “is going down and going down and going down.” Johansson later apologized and admitted that the opposite is true.
Johansson was a teacher from 1992 to 1994, and then she was appointed Minister for Schools by Prime Minister Ingvar Karlsson. She and Erik Asbrink, the Minister for Finance at the time, announced their desire to “publicly confirm our love” and to end their relationship. Johansson resigned from the government shortly after. In the years that followed, Johansson worked in private industry.
