Slesarenko placed fourth at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics in the women’s high jumping with a jump height of 2.01 meters. She failed to jump 2.03 meters on three attempts. After failing drug tests from Beijing, Slesarenko and Anna Chicherova were disqualified from the 2016 event.
She won the World Indoor Championships in 2006 with 2.02 meters. She was fifth at the 2006 European Athletics Championships.

She was largely unknown prior to 2004 when she set a new standard by clearing 2.04m and won the World Indoor Championships. She won the SPAR European Cup in the outdoor season with the same result. This improved her personal record of 1.97, which she had set back in 2002. At the 2004 Summer Olympics she continued to be in good form, winning the gold medal with a national and personal record for 2.06 metres. This beat the 1996 Olympic record set by Stefka Kstadinova. She managed to get to 2.10, which would have been the world record. The World Athletics Final was her final victory.
She was injured and was unable to compete in the 2005 World Championships.
Slesarenko retired in 2014 after a successful career, and is currently a director of a winter sports academy in Volgograd, her home city.
