When Premier Doug Ford eliminated the province’s French-language services commissioner and cancelled plans for a new French language university, she left the party on November 29, 2018, to sit as an independent. When the government would announce that they would be commissioner position within the office of the provincial ombudsman, establish a Ministry of Francophone Affairs and hire a senior policy adviser on francophone affairs in the premier’s office. She found the decisions to be a form of “partial backtracking”.
A Radio-Canada article published in June 2019 notes that since leaving the PC Party, she has been present for only 7 voting sessions in the Legislature, out of a possible 60. However, this was due to an injury following an accident in Vancouver where she was treated at a Vancouver hospital and required treatment for the injury for months to follow.
On January 16, 2020, Simard joined the Ontario Liberal Party.
Simard appeared as a guest on the Canadian French-language television show Tout le monde en parle in November 2018. She has made many other TV media appearances.
