- She is a Russian television journalist best known for her coverage on the First and Second Chechen Wars.
Masyuk was forced to resign from a Chechen assignment in 1997 after she received threats. She persuaded her editor to let her cover a rally at Grozny, the Chechen capital, and interview rebel commander Salman Raduyev. Masyuk, Ilya Mordyukov (cameraman) and Dmitri Uchev (sound engineer) were on their way back from Grozny to Ingushetia on 10 May when six masked, armed men pulled over their car. Three journalists were forced to get into another vehicle and then driven away from the scene.
In 2004, Masyuk created a four-part documentary entitled The Character of Friendship, exploring potential dangers in the Sino-Russian relationship. Despite orders from many local governments that it not be allowed to air, the documentary was shown widely across Russia.
Vladimir Zhirinovsky founder of the highly nationalist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, charged Masyuk with being on the payroll of Chechen separatists in 1996. Masyuk brought Zhirinovsky before the court for slander. In December 1997, the court ordered Zhirinovsky publicly to apologize and to pay Masyuk $5,000 damages.

Masyuk received a journalism degree from Moscow State University. She began her work for NTV in 1994 as a journalist covering the First Chechen War. Later, she stated that she tried to “show the Chechen side to the story, to allow them to tell their perspective, to show how horrible the war was for civilians, and even Russian soldiers.” She and NTV Russia were awarded the top television awards for their coverage.
Masyuk was named in 1995 a Duke University media fellow, and she teaches at the DeWitt Wallace Center for Communications and Journalism. After her release in 1997 from captivity, Masyuk was awarded the International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists.
In 1998, Masyuk was declared persona non grata by the Foreign Ministry of Tajikistan after broadcasting reports critical of the nation’s government.
