Yawa HansenQuao, the oldest daughter of a Ghanaian politician, fled her country in the 1980s amid political turmoil. She was born in Togo, and later moved to the United States as a refugee. She was like many African refugees who fled their continent. She was brought up between two cultures and assimilated both. Yawa was raised in two cultures and was able to adapt to both. Yawa was an adolescent when she finally returned home in 1996. Her inability to communicate with other African-born children due to cultural and dialect barriers kept her from forming relationships. Yawa quickly realized the limited advancement opportunities for African young women. After her guardians were removed and the family was facing difficult budgetary times, she had to support her family and care for her father who died from cancer.

She also serves on the Advisory Board of Women’s Institute for Global Leadership at Benedictine University. She is the founder of Leading Ladies Network (LLN) and a member the African Leadership Network. She is an influencer in education and well-being for the girl child.

Despite all these hardships, Yawa had a support network in her father, a friend, and her mentor from US Junior Achievement. Because she saw potential in her, this mentor paid Yawa’s school tuition during family financial crisis to ensure she could continue school. School was a place for Yawa’s leadership potential and creative energy. Many roles in student government were given to her for her maturity and responsibility.
