Yasuhiro Yamashita, (Shan Xia Yu, Yamashita Yasuhiro) is a Japanese judo practitioner. He was born on June 1, 1957. He is currently an instructor or advisor for many organizations, including Tokai University and the International Judo Federation. After a remarkable career that saw him win five gold medals at international competitions, and record 203 consecutive victories (with seven draws in between), he retired from competitive judo in June 1985. On October 9, 1984, he was awarded the Japanese National Prize of Honor.

Yamashita was undefeated at both national and international competitions. However, he did draw several matches with Hitoshi Saito, two-time Olympic gold medalist. Yamashita faced Saito at the All-Japan Judo Championships final match for three consecutive years, 1983-1985. He won every one of those matches. Yamashita, who was only 28 years old, decided to stop competing in judo after suffering numerous injuries over his career.

Japan boycotted 1980 Summer Olympics to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Yamashita was then forced to watch as his competitors competed on the Olympic stage. Yamashita also won three more World Championships gold medals, before qualifying for 1984’s Olympics. He was also the only Japanese judo competition from the boycott to qualify for the 1984 Summer Olympics.

He had already earned a black belt when he reached junior high school. After graduating from Tokaidai Sagami High School, Yamashita continued his judo training under the tutelage of 1964 Summer Olympics gold-medalist Isao Iokuma and 1967 World Judo Championships silver medalist Nobuyuki Sato. His streak of 203 wins began in October 1977 in an exhibition match in the Soviet Union and ended in April 1985 when he won the All-Japan Judo Championships for the 9th time.

Yamashita was a replacement student during his freshman year at Tokai University and qualified for the Olympics in 1976. He was 19 years old when he became the youngest judoka to win the All-Japan Judo Championships open category in 1977. He won a gold medal in the 1979 World Judo Championships and was selected to the Japanese Olympic team. This was after a controversial draw against Sumio Endo, a 1976 Summer Olympics bronze medalist. Yamashita was the favourite to win the 1980 All Japan championships. However, Endo placed Yamashita into a Kani Basami and broke Yamashita’s fibula. The match was declared draw despite Yamashita being injured and unable to continue. Kani Basami was legal until the match. However, Yamashita’s serious injury forced officials to ban its use in international competitions.

Yamashita served as an instructor for numerous organizations before becoming the International Judo Federation’s Director of Education in September, 2003. His presence as the head coach of the Japanese judo team was felt when he strongly protested the controversial decision in a match between David Douillet and Shinichi Shinohara at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Yamashita has also compiled an instructional judo video with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also holds a black belt in judo. The two first met during Putin’s visit to Tokyo in 2005, and Yamashita has traveled to St. Petersburg to visit the President’s former judo school.
