Tafer, under-18 team, scored seven goals in eight matches. He scored a hat- trick against Germany on 25 March 2009. It was a 4-3 win. Tafer scored another hat trick against England on 13 June. This time, he won 4-2. The match took place at Wembley Stadium before 15,000 spectators. Trevor Brooking, chairman of The Football Association presented the Fallenhero Trophy to the winning team. Francis Smerecki called Tafer again for under-19 duties. This was his first appearance with Team Sendai Cup 2009. Tafer scored in four consecutive matches, beginning with the team’s victory over Belgium 2-1. He was selected to Smerecki’s 18-man squad on 7 June 2010 to take part in the 2010 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship. He scored the first goal in the 1-1 draw between England and France during the tournament. This draw secured the club a place at the semi-final stage of the competition, where France defeated Croatia by 2-1. Tafer was a substitute in the half-time and helped to score the opening goal of the team’s victory, scored by Gilles Sunu. France was trailing by 1-0 before the equalizer. France won the match 2-1 after a late goal by Alexandre Lacazette, Tafer’s domestic teammate. This is the second UEFA Under-19 title for France.
Despite being on the first-team, Tafer was limited to playing mostly on the club’s Championnat de France amateur team appearing in 15 matches scoring five goals, which included a brace against RCO Agde and goals against rivals Saint- Étienne and AS Lyon Duchère. On 24 January 2009, Tafer made his professional debut in the club’s Coupe de France match against Concarneau coming on as a substitute in the 75th minute. In the match, he was instrumental in the club’s 5th goal after taking a pass and shooting the ball, which went off the post. Teammate Kader Keïta quickly pounced on the rebound and converted the goal. Lyon won the match 6–0. Two weeks later, Tafer made his league debut making a one-minute cameo appearance in a 3–1 victory over Nice. Tafer made two more league appearances being relegated back to the amateur team.
On 24 August 2010, Lyon confirmed that the club had loaned out Tafer to fellow Ligue 1 club Toulouse. The loan was for the entire 2010–11 season and had a buyout option for €4 million. His signing was cited as a replacement for the departed André-Pierre Gignac, who joined Marseille. Tafer was presented to the media by the club on 25 August and was given the number 10 shirt, formerly worn by Gignac.

Tafer, a France youth international, has played at the under-17, under-18 and under-19 levels. On 2 October 2007, he made his international youth debut against Switzerland with the under-17 team. In the team’s win 4-0, Tafer scored two goals. Tafer scored both goals for the team’s win over Turkey on 4/12/2007. He helped the team to 2nd place at the Algarve Cup, Portugal by scoring the fifth goal of his campaign in the 4-2 victory against Denmark. Tafer won a double against Israel during the Elite Round of qualification for 2008 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship. France won the round without a loss, qualifying for the UEFA-sanctioned tournament. Tafer was the top scorer at the tournament with four goals. After the 2007-08 season, Tafer signed a professional contract with Lyon. He agreed to a three year contract that would run until 2011. He was named to Lyon’s first-team squad for the 2008-09 season and was given the 34 shirt. However, he was later reassigned the number 29. Tafer played in four of five matches during the club’s preseason tour. In the preseason, he scored three goals, one against second division club Nimes and one against Rapid Bucuresti in Romania. He also scored one against Nancy, a fellow Ligue 1 club.
For the 2009–10 season, Tafer’s playing time was slightly increased. On 26 September 2009 in his season debut, he scored his first professional goal against Toulouse after appearing in the match as a halftime substitute. The goal drew the match at 1–1 and Lyon won the match after a late second-half goal from Bafétimbi Gomis. Two months later, he assisted on César Delgado’s goal in a 2–0 victory over Boulogne. On 13 January 2010, Tafer made his first career start in a 3–0 win over Metz in the Coupe de la Ligue playing the entire match.
