Ferrera was named manager of Standard Liege in September 2015. Ferrera won the domestic cup in that season but he was fired early in the 2016-17 season because of disputes with the board. Aleksandar Jankovic replaced Ferrera. Jankovic’s old club Mechelen immediately hired Ferrera as a replacement for the two-season contract.

Ferrera was the son of a Spanish father, and an Italian mother. Ferrera retained his Spanish citizenship until 1992 when he was naturalized as a Belgian citizen. Francisco Ferrera, his father, and Emilio Ferrera, his uncles are all Belgian football coaches.
Ferrera was named head coach of the Anderlecht youth soccer team in 2004. At that time, Adnan Januzaj and Romelu Lukaku were also part of the team. Ferrera joined the technical staff at AA Gent in 2010, under the direction of Michel Preud’homme. Ferrera then went on to join Al-Shabab, a Saudi Arabian football club.
On 14 October 2019, Ferrera was appointed as the new manager of Saudi Professional League outfit Al-Fateh.
