Yang Lian is one of the most popular and richest Chinese poet who was born on February 22, 1955 in Bern, Switzerland. Yang Lian (Chinese name Yang Lian Yang Lian; born 22 February 1955 in Beijing) is a Swiss-Chinese writer who is associated with the Misty Poets as well as the Searching for Roots school. He was born in Bern in Switzerland in 1955. He was raised in Beijing where he attended primary school.
The controversy surrounding the ‘Today” group was intense in the 1980s. At that time, the derogatory term ‘Misty Poets ‘was used to them. Yang’s 1983 poem, ‘Norlang’, which is the name of a Tibetan waterfall, was criticized as part of an Anti-Spiritual Pollution Campaign. A warrant was issued for Yang’s arrest. After a tip from friends, he managed to escape and the campaign was over soon after.
Yang Lian has held writers’ fellowships in Australia , United States, Italy and Germany, and has travelled broadly. Although he has retained New Zealand citizenship (1993), and later became a British citizen (2008) too. he has lived in London since 1997, and he lives in Berlin and London now.
Since 2005 he is professor at European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland and artistic director of the Unique Mother Tongue series of international poetry-arts events held periodically in London. Since 2017, he, together with Mang Ke and Tang Xiaodu, republished the online magazine Survivors Poetry [1] as one of two chief editors.
Yang started writing traditional Chinese poetry in rural China while he was working. This was despite the fact that this type of poetry was officially banned under Mao Zedong’s rule. He became involved in the group of poets who wrote for “Today” (Jintian), magazine in 1979. His style of poetry evolved into the experimental, modernist style that is common to this group.

After 1966, the Cultural Revolution broke his education. He was sent to Changping, near Beijing in 1974 to be’re-education by labor’. There he did a variety tasks such as digging graves. Yang returned to Beijing in 1977 after the Cultural Revolution ended and Mao Zedong died.
Yang Lian has published 15 collections of poetry, two collections containing poetical prose and many essays, as well as one large book of autobiographical prose. He has also translated all of George Orwell’s fiction into Chinese (not yet published due to China’s censorship). His works have been translated into over thirty languages including English, German and French as well as Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and other Eastern European languages. His most notable works include the sequences and long poetry such as Yi, Where the Sea Stands Still and Concentric Circles, Narrive Poetry and Anniversary Snow…etc. They show a deep understanding and creative connections with Classical Chinese poetry. His work has been described as “like MacDiarmid meets Rilke, with a Samurai sword drawn!” He is considered “one the most important voices in Chinese literature” as well as “one the greatest world poets of our time”. Yang Lian, W. N. Herbert, Qin Xiaoyu, Brian Holton, and Qin Xiaoyu co-edit Jade Ladder. This brand new Anthology of Contemporary Chinese Poetry (1978 – 2008) in English was published by Bloodaxe Books in April 2012. His literary writing and outspoken voice have been praised for being a unique voice in literature, politics, and culture around the world over the years.
Yang Lian was invited to visit Australia by the Australian Arts Council at Aug. 1988, and invited to become a visiting scholar by University of Auckland at Feb, 1989. Yang Lian was in Auckland, New Zealand at the time of the Tiananmen incident, and was involved with protests against the actions of the Chinese government. His work was blacklisted in China shortly after June 4, 1989, and two books of his poetry awaiting publication there were pulped. since then, he became a Chinese poet in exile in New Zealand.
