Following her graduation in 1997, Xue began working for CCTV-10 (the Science and Education channel within the CCTV Network) as a producer. While producing, Xue participated in several famous Chinese TV shows and movies as screenwriter. As of 2001, Xue wrote the screenplay of the highly rated TV program Don’t Be Afraid of Strangers Domestic Violence along with her co- writer Jiang Wei. Chen Kaige; together they wrote the story of the film. In 2005 the film was recognized as “Best Picture” by the Golden Rooster Awards in 2002.
In the year 2010, Xue introduced her directorial debut with Ocean Heaven. The film is based on the tale of a plain and unadorned father who takes the care of his young son autistic. The internationally renowned Kungfu film Star, Jet Li, plays the diligent father in the film. The film is about the rarely spoken about subject of the marginalized class, thereby drawing considerable attention from various sectors in Chinese society.
