Xavier Bettel is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on March 3, 1973 in Luxembourg. Bettel was born the 3rd of March 1973, in Luxembourg City. The father of Bettel, Claude Bettel, was a wine trader and His mother, Aniela, is of French Russian descent. She is also a grandniece of Sergei Rachmaninoff, the composer. After finishing his secondary schooling in the Lycee Helene Boucher in Thionville, Bettel obtained a master’s degree in Public and European Law and a DEA in Political Science and Public Law from Nancy 2 University in Nancy, France. He also was a student of maritime law aswell in Canon law in Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece which is where the law school was a part of the Erasmus Programme. For four years during the beginning of 2000, He hosted Sonndes em 8, a weekly talkshow on the now defunct private T.TV television channel. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2017. was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sacred Heart University Luxembourg.

Bettel is gay and has said that, increasingly the population of Luxembourg “people do not consider the fact of whether someone is gay or not”. Bettel is Luxembourg’s first Prime Minister and, globally the third openly gay head of state following Iceland’s Premier Johanna Sigurdardottir (2009-2013) and the Belgian Premier Elio Di Rupo (2011-2014). In 2017 he was one of three world leaders currently in office with the other two being Leo Varadkar, the Taoiseach of Ireland and Ana Brnabic, the Prime Minister of Serbia.

In 2013, Bettel was elected leader of the Democratic Party, and in the 2013 election, led the party to a third-ranked position in parliamentary seats. On 25 October, Bettel was designated by Grand Duke Henri as the formateur for the next government. He assumed his post as Luxembourg’s Prime Minister on 4 December 2013. In the government’s coalition of the Democratic Party, Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party and The Greens, he leads the cabinet with Co-Deputy Prime Ministers Étienne Schneider and Félix Braz. In his first term, he also holds the functions of Minister of State, Minister for Communications and the Media, Minister for Culture and Minister for Religious Affairs.

Bettel has been married to Gauthier Destenay since 2015, the same year that same-sex marriage was introduced to Luxembourg.

In the 1999 municipal elections, Bettel was elected to Luxembourg City’s council of community members which placed him 6th on the DP’s list. After his appointment into the municipal Council on the 12th of July 2001, he was formally certified as an attorney. At the time of the 2004 legislative elections, Bettel had significantly consolidated his position and was in fourth place (of the 5 DP members who were elected) and was guaranteed an appointment to the Chamber of Deputies. On the 28th of November, 2005, following the elections held in the communal area, where Bettel was ranked fourth on the DP list, Bettel was appointed echevin on the Council of Luxembourg City.

Xavier Bettel (Luxembourgish pronunciation: [‘ksavie: ‘b@t@l]; born on March 3, 1973) is a Luxembourg politician who has served as the the Prime Minister of Luxembourg since the year 2013. He previously served as the Mayor of Luxembourg City, and was also a member of Luxembourg’s Chamber of Deputies.

Bettel was a candidate for his seat in the Chamber of Deputies in the 1999 legislative election. She placed 10th out of DP candidate candidates from the Centre constituency, with only the top seven getting elected. But it was the DP beat out Lux Socialist Workers’ Part (LSAP) in the race to be the second largest party and its members made up most of the government, as Christians Social People’s Party’s (CSV) allies in coalition. So it was Lydie Poller and Anne Brasseur vacating their seats to join the government and Colette Flesch refusing to take her seat in order to be able to focus on her job as a member in the European Parliament, Bettel was appointed to the Chamber beginning on the 12th of August 1999.

Following municipal elections on 9 October 2011, at the young age of 38, Bettel was sworn in as Mayor of Luxembourg on 24 November 2011.
