Wu Gan Biography

Wu Gan is one of the most popular and richest Human Rights Activist who was born on February 14, 1973 in Fuqing, China. Wu Gan (Chinese: Wu Gan born on February 14, 1972) is a Chinese blogger and human rights advocate who hails from Fuqing, Fujian who uses the name on the internet as “Super Vulgar Butcher” (Chinese: Chao Ji Di Su Tu Fu ) or “Butcher Wu Gan” (Chinese Tu Fu Wu Gan ), and is famous for his provocative banners and signs to support his protests. The judge sentenced him to 8 years’ imprisonment at the end of December 2017, for subversion the state’s power and is currently imprisoned at Qingliu Prison in Fujian.

On the 8th of November, 2018 when he was in jail, all of the tweets sent Wu Gan’s tweets between the month of November to May 2015 (up until the time Wu Gan was detained and was unable to tweet anymore) had been deleted bots.

Wu’s father, Xu Xiaoshun (徐孝顺 ), visited his son at Qingliu Prison in Fujian in early March 2019, and reported that Wu Gan was suffering from poor health and a possible spinal injury due to the mistreatment and torture he had suffered while in pre-trial detention.

In August of 2017, after two years in prison, Wu was put on trial in Tianjin in Tianjin, accused of subversion of the state’s power. On December 26, 2017, Wu was found guilty and sentenced to eight years of prison. This is among the most severe sentences handed down to an Chinese civil rights activist in the years since the beginning of China’s crackdown against activists and lawyers in 2015.

Wu has been active in human rights advocacy since May 2008 , when Wu defended the woman who was charged of murder as part of deng Yujiao incident. Since then, he has fought in the media and on the streets for a variety of human rights issues, by using provocative T-shirts and banners , and performance art to promote the cases he fights to defend. In one instance, he sketched the image of a Hitler moustache on the photograph of the Chief Judge and demanded to know the amount of bribe that he would take.

On 4 January 2018, Ge Yongxi one of Wu Gan’s lawyers, confirmed that Wu Gan has filed an appeal against his 8-year sentence. In addition to the appeal, Wu Gan petitioned the Chinese judiciary to ask that the National People’s Congress either amend or nullify subversion-related charges and punishments as stipulated by article 105 of the nation’s Criminal Law.
