Woodrow “Woody” Dantzler III (born on the 4th of October 1979) is an ex- American football safety and running back within the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons. He played in the NCAA football tournament in the NCAA Division at Clemson University.
The year 2001 was the most successful for Dantzler. Dantzler was a runner for 175 yards with scored 13 touchdowns. He was one of the very few players of NCAA football’s history to throw greater than 220 yards, and rush for more than 1,000 yards in one season. He was also is the only player to ever in NCAA history to rush for greater than 5,000 miles and run more than 2,500 yards during his career. When he played The Citadel, he set school records for completion percentage as well as efficiency of passing, completing the pass on 16 out of 17 attempts. In the ninth-ranked game against Georgia Tech, he contributed to a surprise 47-44 win with a 164-yard rushing effort and making passes for 254 yards, and scoring the game-winning score during overtime via the 11 yard run. In the game against North Carolina State University, He racked up 517 total yards (fifth-best for the ACC) and 517 yards of total offense (fifth-best in ACC history) He completed 22 of his 27 throws, resulting in 33 yards. Dantzler was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys after the 2002 NFL Draft on April 29, to play as a running back. He was released on September 1 and signed to the practice squad. On November 27, he was promoted to the active roster to return kickoffs. On December 8, he scored his first NFL touchdown when he returned a kickoff for 84 yards against the San Francisco 49ers.
On September 2, 2003, he was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Falcons. He was declared inactive in 7 games. He rushed for one touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and had some snaps at quarterback for the first time in his NFL Career. In 2004, he was moved to wide receiver. On September 5, he was waived with an ankle injury that he suffered in the preseason finale against the Washington Redskins.
