Wienand has studied chemistry at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn and completed his PhD in 2002 in bioorganic and organic chemical chemistry from the University of Cologne, both located in Germany. He also has an Executive Master’s degree on International Finance from HEC Ecole des hautes etudes commerciales de Paris (2017). He began his career with Evonik Industries AG, a German specialty chemicals company Evonik Industries AG (previously Degussa AG). Since 2010 he serves as a member of the executive board of the Swiss chemical-pharmaceutical company Siegfried AG. From 2019 Wolfgang Wienand leads the Siegfried group as the group’s Chief Executive Officer.

Since 1991, his coach was the current German National coach of the the men’s foil, Frank-Eberhard Hootje.
