Kowalewski was replaced by Tomasz Kuszczak from the Poland’s Euro 2008 squad following the Manchester United goalkeeper’s back injury.

In September 2009 he was recalled to the squad for the World Cup Qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Slovakia by coach Stefan Majewski. He was the starter against the Czechs as Poland slipped to a 2–0 defeat on 10 October 2009 which killed off any lingering hopes of qualifying for the tournament finals. Kowalewski was made Poland debut on February 2, 2002, but he made only a few appearances before he was recalled to the team shortly before the start of Euro 2008 qualifying. He was substituted by Artur Boruc after he was given two yellow cards against Portugal on the 11th of October, 2006. Poland beat Portugal 2-1.

Kowalewski made his debut in the top flight with Wigry Suwalki in the 1996-97 season. However, it wasn’t until 2001-02, following an extended loan with second division club Dyskobolia Grodzisk, that he eventually established his own identity with Legia. The season was in its middle when Kowalewski moved towards FC Shakhtar Donetsk and only conceded one goal in nine league games , as Shakhtar triumphed to winning the Ukrainian victory for only the second time in its history.

After first moving to Spartak Moscow for a loan deal in the summer of 2003 Kowalewski was signed on a 5-year deal with Spartak on the 7th of November, 2003. In the latter part of 2007, after following the loss of his position in the team to Stipe Pletikosa, the player asked to be let go of the club. In December 2007, Spartak decided to end his contract. He hadn’t played for Spartak for more than one year.

On 17 January 2008 it was announced that Kowalewski had started a trial period with Premier League club Reading. On 3 February 2008, Kowalewski signed a three-year deal with Polish club Korona Kielce.
