Bulti was a big fan of long distances throughout the rest of his career. In 1987, he was crowned the winner in Helsinki over 10,000 meters in a the new personal record timing of 27:29.41 minutes. This placed Bulti second on the 1987’s world rankings, however, he was a disappointing 24th place finish at the World Championships in Rome. Bulti set a career-best time of 2:08:44 to finish third in the Rotterdam Marathon during 1988. However his absence meant he could not take part in the Olympic Games in Seoul, because of the continuing Ethiopian boycott.

In 1984, he was a an impressive 5000-meter medalist for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles He finished second in Florence in front of Said Aouita in a time of 13:10.08 minutes (fourth in the annual ranking) However, he was not able to participate in the Olympics because of an Ethiopian boycott. The Friendship Games in Moscow, Bulti placed third at 5500 metres and was second at 10,000m and broke the 28-minute barrier. Following these results, Wodajo exploded in 1985 and began the season with a Bronze medal from the 1985 IAAF World Cross Country Championships which he won just behind Carlos Lopes and Paul Kipkoech. In the African Championships, he became the champion over both 10,000 m and 5000 meters distances, beating a number of top runners while relegating Kipkoech to second and third spot. He was chosen to represent Africa in all distances in the World Cup in Canberra and on day one winning the gold medal over the longer distance because of his quick finish. He immediately followed by the bronze medal in the distance of the 5000 meters.
