Eric Winston White (born 26 October 1958) is an English former professional footballer who had 529 appearances in the league with 13 clubs over 17 years of playing within the Football League.
White was signed by Colchester United on a free transfer in March 1987. White played 78 times in all competitions, with 50 during 1987-88. He then moving to Burnley at a cost of PS17,500 in October of 1988. In his time on Layer Road the club slipped into to the Fourth Division, as Mike Walker was replaced by Roger Brown and then Steve Foley. He scored two goals against Colchester on the 10th of February, 1989, scoring seven goals over 39 matches in the “Clarets” in 1988-89; the Lancashire Telegraph ran with the headline “Winston turns on the black magic”. The manager Brian Miller had left Turf Moor in the month prior and the club was able to improve under new coach Frank Casper. White recorded nine goal (including penalty shots of six) in his 50 appearances during 1989-90. White scored six goals in the 40 games in 1990-91, which helped the team to make it to the play-offs where they were knocked out to Torquay United. In the days before the play-offs began, the club signed him for West Bromwich Albion for a cost of PS35,000.
He began his career at Leicester City, before signing with Hereford United three years later. The year 1983 was the time he landed at Bury after brief stints at Hong Kong Rangers, Chesterfield, Port Vale and Stockport County. He assisted with the “Shakers” to win promotion from the Fourth Division in 1984-85. He was loaned out to Rochdale after which he was permitted to join Colchester United on a free transfer in March 1987. He was traded the club to Burnley for PS17,500 on October 1988, and then joined West Bromwich Albion for a PS35,000 price in 1991. He was let go of his contract in the month of October 1992, after which he was briefly with Bury, Doncaster Rovers, Carlisle United, and Wigan Athletic.

White began his career with Leicester City, who finished 11th in the First Division in 1976-77 under Jimmy Bloomfield’s direction. “The “Foxes” were relegated in the last position between 1977 and 1978, under Frank McLintock, before finishing only three positions and three points higher than those in the Second Division relegation zone in 1978-79 under Jock Wallace, Jr. White then left Filbert Street to join Hereford United for a fee of £15,000 in March 1979. He played 208 games of league and cup in the “Bulls”, scoring 24 goals. He was a part of the 1979 season when he took part in a charity match to West Bromwich Albion’s Len Cantello, that saw the white team compete against a team made up that was comprised of black athletes.
Director Frank Lord failed to take the club out of the Fourth Division re- election zone in 1980-81 and 1979-80, but Edgar Street’s Edgar Street outfit did reach 10th in 1981-82, but falling to the at the bottom of the Football League in 1982-83 under Tommy Hughes. White quit Hereford in 1983 and moved towards Hong Kong to turn out for the Hong Kong Rangers of the Hong Kong First Division League. When he returned to England White played for Chesterfield as well as Port Vale, appearing as an alternate to The “Valiants” in a 2-1 Third Division defeat at Newport County on the 29th of October, 1983. He then left Vale Park two days later. He was transferred for Bury through Stockport County, both of who were part of the Fourth Division. They “Shakers” finished 15th in 1983-84 under Jim Iley, before clinching the fourth automatic promotion slot during 1984 and 1985 Under Martin Dobson. White quit Gigg Lane for a loan time at Rochdale which was struggling in their Fourth Division. Bury maintained the Third Division status in 1985-86 and 1986-87.
The “Baggies” slipped out of the Second Division in 1990–91, and missed out on the Third Division play-offs by one place and three points in 1991–92 under Bobby Gould. White was released from his contract at The Hawthorns by new boss Osvaldo Ardiles in October 1992. He returned to former club Bury, who were managed by his former boss Mike Walsh, and saw the 1992–93 season out with brief spells at Doncaster Rovers, Carlisle United and Wigan Athletic.
