However, over the next eight games, he gave up run in just seven games and his ERA was soaring to 6.38 and on the 20th of June Abreu was assigned to an assignment. Abreu was called up during September, as rosters increased. Abreu ended his 2007 campaign with a 1-1 record and an 5.93 ERA in 26 games. He was released following the season.

Abreu’s progress was slow, but (except in four contests) did not make it from Single-A until 2001, when he had the ERA of 4.64 over the course of a complete year at Double-A Greenville. After the season ended Abreu was transferred with the San Diego Padres for Rudy Seanez in the following spring , he was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Syketo Anderson and, after 11 games then released within six weeks. He was then picked up from the Kansas City Royals, and ended the 2002 season at the Double-A level in Wichita with a strong 3.32 ERA. In the final days of the season the team signed him to the New York Yankees. He was not able to participate in 2003 due to an injury being released on January. His contract was with the Los Angeles Dodgers, had several unimpressive performances before being released. He was taken over to the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he recorded an ERA of 5.68 in Triple-A. In 2004, he was let go again, and played during the Mexican league before being officially signed by Baltimore Orioles in December 2005.
In 2006, as part of the Orioles the Triple-A affiliate of the Orioles known as known as the Ottawa Lynx, Abreu had his best Triple-A season to date playing in 46 games and registering the ERA of 2.48 And, at the age of 29, he was invited to the major leagues. In his seven games the pitcher pitched only 8 innings and allowed 10 hits, six walks, and 9 runs for an ERA of 10.13
On August 6, 2009, Abreu re-signed with the Rays and was assigned to Triple-A Durham.
