Wimal Weerawansa is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on March 7, 1970 in Kalutara, Western, Sri Lanka. Weerawansha was born on the 7th of March 1970. The father is Weerasangilige the dancer Podineris teacher and professional musician along with Wadachcharige Salie. Weerawansha is the youngest of three siblings (Sarath Weerawansha) and three sisters (Weerasangilige Sumanawathie, Chandani Weerawansha and Nilani Weerawansha). Weerawansha attended Tissa Central College in Kalutara where he was a member of the cricket team of the school. Weerawansha was able to pass 8 GCE O levels and started studying GCE A level but was dismissed for not showing up for classes.

Weerawansha had a dispute with the JVP’s leadership JVP and was exiled from the JVP in March 2008. He was accusing him of espionage, corruption and extra- marital relationships. In May 2008, several dissident JVP MPs under the leadership of Weerawansha created the National Freedom Front (NFF) (Jathika Nidahas Peramuna). The NFF was a part of with the UPFA cabinet in December of 2008. Weerawansha was reelected in the 2010 election for parliament. He was named the Minister for Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities after the election. He was dismissed from his post as minister after the presidential election. He was elected again in the august 2015 parliamentary elections. Weerawansha was elected as minister for Small & Medium Business and Enterprise Development, Industries and Supply chain Management in November of 2019 following the presidential election in 2019.

Following the change in government in January 2015 the police started investigating Weerawansha’s wife Shashi over allegations that she faked official documents to obtain a diplomatic passport. A panel investigating the activities of the housing ministry during Weerawansha’s ministry uncovered financial irregularities and rampant nepotism. Weerawansha was investigated by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) over how several of his relatives obtained government constructed houses at well below market prices. Weerawansha was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport on 23 October 2015 due to discrepancies in his passport. After being questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department, he was produced before Negombo Magistrate’s Court and released on bail. Weerawana was arrested by the Police Financial Crimes Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) on accusations of misusing government vehicles on 10 January 2017. Weerawansha’s bail applications were rejected several times. While he was in custody, Weerawansha started a hunger strike claiming of political revenge by the government. The hunger strike was called off after eight days on requests made by Theras of the Malwathu and Asgiri chapters and fellow politicians. Weerawansha was released on bail on 7 April 2017.

In October 2017, Weerawansha stated that the parliament should be bombed if a new constitution was approved by a parliament vote. The Parliament Speaker urged to inquire into Weerawansha’s statement. Piyasiri Wijenayake, an NFF member criticized Weerawansha and claimed that the thoughts expressed were Weerawansha’s personal views.

Weerawansha played a major role in the JVP’s resistance against President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s devolution plan and also in the Norwegian helped facilitate peace talks in conjunction with militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. On January 20, 2004, The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as well as the JVP created the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA). Weerawansha is one of candidates of the UPFA in the Colombo District at the 2004 elections to the parliamentary seat and was elected again. In June 2005 , the JVP was dissolved from in the UPFA government. Weerawansha was the general-secretary for the Patriotic National Movement (PNM).

Weerasangilige Wimal Weerawansha (born 7 March 1970) is a Sri Lankan politician, Member of Parliament, and the leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF).He is the Minister of Small & Medium Business and Enterprise Development, Industries and Supply chain Management from 2019 and was the minister for Construction and Housing from 2010 until 2015.

Weerawansha was among the Sri Lanka Progressive Front (a JVP front) candidates in the Colombo District at the 1994 elections for the parliamentary seat, but the SLPF did not get one of the districts seats. He ran in the local election in 1997 as an JVP Candidate and won election to the Colombo Municipal Council. He was a candidate in the provincial council elections in 1999 as one of JVP’s candidates in the Colombo District, and as the JVP’s chief minister’s candidate but was not elected. The JVP however elected Weerawansha for his position on the Western Provincial Council. Weerawansha ran in the 2000 parliamentary elections as one of JVP’s candidates in the Colombo District. He was elected, and was a member of the Parliament. He was re-elected in the 2001 election to the Parliament.

Weerawansha has been involved in numerous controversies during his career. In 2006 he was accused of sexually harassing a 24-year-old female employee of the state-owned Lake House. On 8 July 2010 Weerawansha began a hunger strike outside the United Nations office in Colombo to protest against the appointment of the Panel of Experts on Accountability in Sri Lanka by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon. Despite promising to “fast-unto-death” Weerawansha’s hunger strike only lasted until 10 July 2010 and was seen as a publicity stunt. In March 2012 Weerawansha called for Sri Lankans to boycott American products such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, KFC, McDonald’s, Google and Gmail as a protest against the US government sponsoring a resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
