He is known primarily as a composer from the beginning of the 1980s, Mertens started to gain his name after releasing “Struggle for Pleasure”, under the name of his former group Soft Verdict, and for “Maximizing the Audience”, which was written for Jan Fabre’s play Power of Theatrical Madness that premiered on the stage at Venice, Italy.

In August 2007 Mertens signed a contract with EMI Classics (now Warner Classics) for his entire catalog. The label re-released his entire back- catalog beginning in January 2008. EMI Music Belgium also released Mertens’ new work, beginning with the 9-track album Receptacle on 24 September 2007. For this album Mertens decided to work with an orchestra consisting of only women, 17 in total. It is not the first time that Mertens worked with EMI. Already in 1999, Mertens released the soundtrack to the Paul Cox film Molokai: The Story of Father Damien via EMI Classics.
Mertens has released over 60 albums up to now and the majority of them were released under the label Les Disques du Crepuscule from 1980 to 2004. Mertens also recorded a variety in Crepuscule releases and worked with the label regarding its selection of contemporary composers, such as Michael Nyman, Gavin Bryars as well as Glenn Branca. Mertens also co-curated a set of recordings for the Crepuscle label, Lome Arme, that included works of the classical era as well as jazz of the present.

Mertens is a native of Neerpelt, Belgium. He was a student of political and social sciences in the University of Leuven (graduating in 1975) and musicology at Ghent University; he also took piano and music theory classes at Ghent Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
He joined the BRT in 1978. was a producer for the BRT (Belgian Radio and Television later renamed Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroep). In the case of Radio 2 (Radio Brabant) the producer produced concerts featuring Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, Urban Sax and others. He also hosted a show called Funky Town along with Gust De Meyer (with whom produced the experimental album for Amusement only).
