Wilhelmus Maria “Wim” Jonk (born 12 October 1966) is a Dutch football coach Former international player and the former Head of academy in Ajax Amsterdam. Along with Jordi Cruyff Jonk oversees Cruyff Football and is responsible for the world-wide development and diffusion of the legacy of football of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff, who died on the 24th of March in 2016. Jonk is the coach of FC Volendam for the season 2019/2020. This is the team where Jonk began his career as a footballer. FC Volendam currently plays in the Eerste Divisie.
At the same time in Internazionale the club, he made 54 appearances over two seasons, scoring eight goals. He scored in the UEFA Cup Final again, this time when Internazionale took the trophy in 1994. But, after teammates Dennis Bergkamp left Internazionale for Arsenal towards the end of the 1994-95 season Bergkamp felt the chances of being a first-team player for the Italian club were at risk (he was at the time just a few years young) and he returned to the Netherlands to join PSV. He stayed for long enough at PSV to convince manager Guus Hiddink that he should be picked to play in his team for the 1998 World Cup in France after being omitted for Euro 1996. In 1998’s World Cup, Jonk played in five of the seven games which the Netherlands took part in, but did not score any goals.
For the 1998–99 season, Jonk went to join Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of £2.5 million, where he was a regular starter for the relegation-threatened side. Apparently, his once-impressive performances for both club and country had gone and he was frequently injured, which caused the Wednesday fans to voice dissent about a clause in his contract which stipulated that he would automatically receive £5,000 per game which he would miss through injury. At the beginning of the 2000–01 season, he announced his retirement from the game.
With the appointment of Frank Rijkaard as the new manager after the 1998 World Cup, Jonk’s international career seemed to be over. However, he did play once more for the Netherlands in a friendly against Denmark on 18 August 1999. Jonk finished his international career on 49 caps and 11 goals.
His precise passing, impressive vision and the tenacious and hard-working style of playing led to his first appearance for the Dutch national team, winning 3-2 in a friendly game against Austria on May 27, 1992. He was signed to join Internazionale in 1993, prior to his participation in the 1994 World Cup, where he was joined by fellow Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp. The Italian club was reportedly following their famous city rivals Milan in acquiring Dutch players hoping to replicate Milan’s success with Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit in the latter part of the 1980s and into the early 1990s.
