Wilson Kipketer Biography

Wilson Kipketer is one of the most popular and richest Middle-Distance Runner who was born on December 12, 1972 in Kapchemoiywo, Kenya. At the age of 16, he was first spotted by the 1968 in 1972 and 1968 Olympic winner Kip Keino. Keino recommended Kipketer enroll at The Catholic St. Patrick’s School located in Iten which was known for the way it raised young athletes. David Rudisha, who surpassed Kipketer’s world record of 800 meters during 2010, similar to Kipketer being coached by long-time St. Patrick’s teacher, coach as well as former headmaster Colm O’Connell. Like Kipketer, Rudisha did not go to St. Patrick’s, rather was a student at a nearby St. Francis, Kimuron Secondary School located in Iten, Keiyo District.

In 1997, Kipketer had reached the top in his professional career. In March, he took home the 800m gold during the Indoor World Championships in Paris, France. In fact he broke the indoor record at the start of the competition by almost 1 second beating the record of Paul Ereng’s WR 1:44.84 by a whopping 1:43.96. In the final, the runner took an additional second from the record by running an astonishing 1:42.67. On July 7, he set Sebastian Coe’s record (1:41.73) for the 800 meters at a meet held in Stockholm, Sweden. The record was held by Coe for 16 years. He broke the record two times that year, with the first was at Zurich, Switzerland at the Weltklasse Zurich GP on the 13th of August, when he completed the race in 1:41.24. (His record was among three world records to be broken over a 70-minute period in this amazing race and the other two records are the record for the 5,000-meter distance to Haile Gebrselassie, and the steeplechase of 3,000 meters to Wilson Boit Kipketer. To the former the former, he’s not related.) The next day, the 24th of August, he sped up the record for the world to 1:41.11 during the Grand Prix meet in Cologne, Germany. On the 8th of August, at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics at the Olympic Stadium, Athens, Greece He led the race from beginning to finish. The following season, Kipketer contracted malaria and at first intended not to race at all. Eventually, he participated in three meets, winning in Monaco and running a swift 1:43.18 in Zurich. At the European Championships in Budapest but made physical contact with the eventual winner Nils Schumann on the final straight and did not win a medal. He came back in 1999 by finishing second at the Indoor World Championships and bettering that with a gold medal at the 1999 World Championship in Seville, Spain. As in 1997, Kipketer was undefeated in 1999, winning all 10 outdoor races and finishing the year ranked number one in the world in the 800m by Track & Field News magazine.

The truth is that Kipketer wasn’t a Danish citizen and in the year 1996, the International Olympic Committee disallowed him from representing Denmark at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA. Even though he was not a participant in the Olympics however, there is no question that Kipketer was the best 800 meters runner in the world in 1996. He was unbeaten throughout 1996, with wins over the three 800-meter medallists in the 1996 Olympic Games, and set an all-time personal record of 1:41.83 for Rieti at the conclusion of the season. It was the fastest time in the 800 meter anywhere in 12 years and was only 0.1 shy of his World Record. Although he did not compete at his first Olympics, Track & Field News magazine listed him as first in the world at the distance of 800m in 1996. Kipketer has not, however, ever matched or beaten Vebjorn Rodal’s winning time at the 1996 Olympics at every world championship, or Olympic competitions, where pacemakers aren’t allowed.

Wilson Kosgei Kipketer (born 12 December 1972) is a Danish former middle distance runner. He is the second-fastest ever over 800 meters setting an international record, and then breaking the record of his own by two times in 1997. He was the fastest 800m distance for the past decade and was undefeated for three years and running eight of the 17 the fastest times of all time. He took gold in three consecutive editions of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Although he was not able to participate in the 1996 Olympics at the height in his athletic career, Kipketer won the silver medal in 2000, and then bronze in 2004. Kipketer’s record of 800 meters was held for 13 years. It was set to be beaten on August 22, 2010 the day David Rudisha beat it by 0.02 seconds in a time of 1:41.09. Rudisha was able to reduce the world record for 800 metres to be the first and only sub 1 minute 41 second race. Kipketer is still the current holder of the indoor record for the 800m.

In the year 1990, Kipketer travelled to Denmark as an exchange student studying electronics engineering. He was in love with Denmark so that he decided to apply for Danish citizenship. Kipketer was the subject of international the spotlight in 1994 when the athlete won 16 out of 18 800-meter races.
