Willie Earl Shelby (born July 24 1953) is an ex- American football kick returner and running back who was a part of the Cincinnati Bengals and the St. Louis Cardinals of the NFL. As an rookie in the NFL Shelby led the league in a variety of category of return kicks. He played in the NCAA football tournament at Alabama.

Shelby was not as successful as an kicker back in the year 1977, and the Bengals were forced to release him before the start of the season in 1978. He was accepted to Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta Falcons, but the Falcons gave him back to the Bengals after a physical examination found that he’d broken his collar bone during the Bengals in their final practice game before the season against Green Bay Packers. The Bengals were again forced to waive him just a few days later, and then he was signed from the St. Louis Cardinals. He played in 3 of 7 game in the Cardinals as an offensive back and kick returner, in the year 1978 prior to being cut in October to create space on the roster for signing the running back Lawrence Barnes.

Shelby was chosen by the Bengals in the 138th round in the 5th round from the 1976 NFL draft. Shelby saw little action as an offensive back in the year 1976 the year, running just five times in the entire season for just 9 yards. He was, however, the Bengals the primary kick returner. The Bengals returned thirty kickoffs, for 761 yards, which is an average of 25.4 yards per return average. The touchdown was scored with his kickoff return of 97 yards against his team the Cleveland Browns on October 3. The 761 yards he returned from kickoffs were the most in the NFL in that season and his 97-yard return was among the most long in the NFL during that time. His touchdown was placed him in a tie to Cullen Bryant of the Los Angeles Rams for the NFL lead. His 30 kickoff return kicks ranked 2nd place in the NFL just one spot ahead of the league’s leader Lou Piccone, and his 25.4 yards per return average ranked 9th place. Shelby has also returned 21 kicks, resulting in 162 yards, which is a 7.7 yard return rate average.
