William John Cook (born October 18th, 1957 in New Jersey) is an American operations researcher and mathematician. He is also professor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University, where was appointed to the faculty in the year 2018. He is an active part of the National Academy of Engineering. He is famous for his research on the issue of the traveling salesman and is among the creators of Concorde TSP Solver.

He was admitted to the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2009, as well as of INFORMS in the year 2010. Then he was appointed to the National Academy of Engineering in the year 2011. In 2012, he was elected an associate of the American Mathematical Society.

Cook completed his undergraduate studies during his time at Rutgers University, graduating in 1979 with an undergraduate diploma in math. After obtaining a master’s qualification in operation research at Stanford University in 1980, Cook moved to the University of Waterloo, where the doctor received an Ph.D. with a focus on optimization, combinatorics in 1983. Under the direction by U. S. R. Murty. After completing postdoctoral studies with Bonn University University of Bonn, he joined the Cornell University faculty in 1985 after which he transferred towards Columbia University in 1987, and then in 1988, joined the research team of Bell Communications Research. In 1994, he returned academia as the John von Neumann Professor at the University of Bonn, and in 1996, he was transferred into Rice University as Noah Harding Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics. In 2002, he accepted the position as a professor at Georgia Tech. In January of 2013, he was transferred into University of Pittsburgh. University of Pittsburgh as the John Swanson Professor of Industrial Engineering prior to returning at Georgia Tech’s University of Waterloo in June 2013 as professor of the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization and later as a University Professor. In 2018 , he joined Johns Hopkins University as Professor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

In 1998 he was an Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin. He was awarded the Beale Orchard-Hays Award for the Mathematical Programming Society in 2000 as well as his work The Traveling Salesman’s Puzzle A Computational Study was awarded the Frederick W. Lanchester Prize of INFORMS in 2007.
