On the 16th of December on the 16th of December, 2008. Ribeiro suffered a serious injury when he was riding in the rear of his motorbike on wet, rainy roads without helmet. He was admitted to a hospital in a state of coma and had lost visual vision to one of the eyes. Doctors said he had the chance of awakening from his coma. On December 23, doctors declared that he had not awakened from the coma however, his health was improving. This tragic accident has completely ended the career of Ribeiro’s Mixed Martial Arts career. When he was involved in the accident, Will be ranked as the number 7 bantamweight champion in the world in the MMAWeekly Worldwide MMA Ranking System.
In December of 2010 in December 2010, a Shooto Brazil event was held and all profits going to Will Ribeiro’s treatment. The spokesperson for Shooto Brazil, Andre Pederneiras has decided to organize the event to raise money towards Will’s cranioplasty procedure. In May of 2011, Will underwent a successfully surgery to repair his cranioplasty. Ribeiro returned to the fight scene, posing as a boxing trainer and cageside referee. Will Ribeiro also works with social programs that are based in Rio de Janeiro, teaching boxing lessons to the poorest of youth.
Will Ribeiro has reportedly awoken from an induced coma and is recovering well after being hospitalized since December. According to Tatame.com, Luiz Alves, Ribeiro’s Muay Thai coach, recently visited him in the hospital and was surprised to see that Ribeiro was able to talk to him and is currently undergoing therapy after doctors stated he had a 50-50 chance to live due to his injuries suffered in the accident.
