In the year 2010, Elsey has published his memoir Almost isn’t Good Enough about his experience working with non-profit organizations. After having left Soles4Souls and establishing his own company, he founded Elsey Enterprises, a branding and marketing business. While at Soles4Souls it was alleged of stealing charity funds to fund personal reasons by taking out $900,000 to finance the personal property of his clients, which was found to be in violation of Tennessee law. Elsey was later reimbursed in full and denied claims that he mismanaged the funds, claiming that he was securing the funds during the current economic recession. In the year 2016, Elsey Enterprises acquired Shoes With Heart which is a shoe drive business that was that was based on the coast of Southern California.

In 2004, Elsey created Soles4Souls which is a non-profit organization which provides shoes to communities affected by natural catastrophes. Soles4Souls has become one of most rapidly growing charities in the United States, however, it was criticized for claims that a one-dollar donation could provide a pair shoes to those who was in need, because the shoes received were then sold to wholesalers who then sold them to small-scale businesses in developing countries , instead of shipping them directly overseas. One shoe maker donated brand new shoes, but the charity sold them back to the wholesalers and then sold them in discount stores across the USA. In the year 2010, Elsey added Soles4Souls into Clothes4Souls and, in 2011, Elsey added Hope4Souls.
